Kupi Park offset project

Kupi Park Karana Downs, Brisbane City Council

Project duration

2 years

Project area size

2.3 hectares

Project background

Kupi Park is a BCC managed land parcel in Karana Downs. The site is located within the park alongside and adjacent to a creek line, where there is a small patch of rainforest including a mixture of native and exotic species. The adjoining areas are open forest. There was a high density of weeds in the ground, shrub and tree layers across the whole site, with a high diversity of exotic vines also present.

The site is an important one as it is a known location for fireflies with reports of mass firefly displays from September each year. Additionally, there is a grey-headed flying fox camp present in the South of the site, a species which is listed as vulnerable by the Commonwealth Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999 (EPBC Act).

The land was historically cleared and used for agricultural purposes until the 1970s when it was subdivided and the suburb of Karana Downs was created. The site has since been a reserve and due to the mixture of species present there, it has likely undergone planting during this time.

Project objectives

  • Initial vegetation management and weed reduction in preparation for the areas that require planting.
  • Ongoing Bushcare and maintenance of the existing well-established native bushland.
  • Planting and establishment of adequate native species, taking into consideration the regional ecosystem descriptions.
  • Revegetation of the canopy, shrub and groundcover species.
  • Identify, condition and establish erosion control measures in areas prone to creek flooding.
  • Ongoing treatment of all environmental weeds to manage impact on fauna habitat due to the site comprising a significant biodiversity habitat and corridor.

Project accomplishments

  • 1,358 trees, shrubs and groundcovers planted and established.
  • Increased native biomass vegetation that has enhanced wildlife habitat and reduced the impact of erosion.
  • Maintenance of the site and reduction of exotic species’ footprint.
