Ross Road Park offset project

Ross Road Park Upper Kedron, Brisbane City Council

Project duration

5 years

Project area size

14.8 Hectares

Project background

In 2019 Brisbane Bushcare was engaged to rehabilitate a BCC managed land parcel in Upper Kedron. The property had previously been a dairy farm, run and owned by the Marshall family for five generations and the paddocks had been used for grass feed for the cattle. The site forms part of the Council’s Conservation Reserves network and is open to the public. Due to the previous land use, exotic pasture grasses, legumes, woody weeds and vines could be found throughout the site. The site is also part of the BCC koala habitat rehabilitation program.

Project objectives

  • Initial vegetation management and weed reduction in preparation for planting.
  • Supply, planting and establishment of adequate native species, taking into consideration the regional ecosystem descriptions.
  • Revegetation of the canopy, shrub and groundcover species.
  • Ongoing treatment of all environmental weeds to manage impact on fauna habitat due to the site comprising a significant biodiversity habitat and corridor.

Project accomplishments

  • 16,000 trees, shrubs and groundcovers planted and established.
  • Increased native biomass vegetation that has enhanced wildlife habitat and reduced the impact of erosion.
  • Maintenance of the site and reduction of exotic species’ footprint.
